Andre “S.O.G.” Ward (WBA, IBF, WBO Light Heavyweight Champion) vs. Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev
“First, accept sadness. Realize that without losing, winning isn’t so great.”
– Alyssa Milano
In 2016 boxing fans witnessed the clash of two pound-for-pound undefeated titans. As the number two pound-for-pound boxer Andre “S.O.G.” Ward faced Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev (third on pound-for-pound list), for the IBF, WBA, and WBO light heavyweight titles. Kovalev wasn’t just defending his championship belts but, his rank as one of the best pound-for-pound boxers in the world.
It was a fight for the ages. Rarely in a sport like boxing do you see two undefeated boxers fight in their prime. This was a treat for all to see, it was a battle of braun versus brains. Kovalev was known for his massive knockout power, even future Hall of Famer, Bernard Hopkins, commented on this.
“I was in the ring with him [Kovalev]. When a guy hits hard like a guy like Sergey, he has to be seen as the most accurate and the biggest puncher right now. Absolutely.”
Andre Ward, former WBA Super middleweight champion, known for his fight IQ, ring intelligence and effective counter striking rose in weight to challenge Kovalev. In their first battle, Kovalev started off strong knocking Ward down in the 2nd round. As the fight continued Ward gained the upper hand. The fight was close throughout with Ward snagging a razor thin 114-113 unanimous decision.
Kovalev learned what it felt like to lose for the first time in his boxing career. He looks to avenge his sole loss against Ward Saturday, June 17th, at the Mandalay Bay Event Center Las Vegas. If he is successful this will be the sweetest victory he has ever tasted. However, he has a tough opponent in Ward who knows what to expect against Kovalev, so this time around it’ll be much easier to plan ahead.
This will be another tough decision. However, Ward will be able to utilize his superior fight IQ, ring intelligence, and effective counter striking.
Ward via unanimous decision.
