Doxter Shows Why He Is League’s Top Prospect

Matti Doxter threw all seven innings in a dominating performance where he gave up just three hits and struck out ten. Doxter was thoroughly in command all afternoon and it made the late 2-1 lead feel safe and secure. The Redbirds runs came in odd fashion. The first was on a 1st inning infield pop up that was lost in the sun, thus registering as an RBI single for Raul Shah. The second run came on an errant pickoff throw in the 6th. The tenth ranked prospect by Ahead of…

The Birds Are Back On Track Thanks To A Big Effort From Nuñez

The rain held up and the sunshine came out in Plattsburgh – I’m not just talking about the weather. Without spending too much time boasting about my forecasting ability, Dimitri Nuñez was dazzling once again! The lefty struck out eight and only walked one while scattering seven hits through 8.1 innings of work. It was a symmetrical effort for the Birds in the RBI category. Tarik El-Abour broke things open early with a two-run single, newly acquired d’Aundray Van Slyke added a two-run single of his own and Josh Martinez…

The Long Awaited Debut of Brendan McKay

Brendan McKay was selected 4th overall in the 2017 MLB draft. McKay will pitch and hit at Tampa Bay’s short season affiliate, the Hudson Valley Renegades. At Louisville McKay racked up 109 innings in the regular season with an impressive 11-3 record and a 2.56 ERA. He also had 146 strike outs to only 35 walks. On the other side of the ball, McKay batted .341 with 18 homeruns and 57 RBI’s. While he may not go to the majors as both a pitcher and a hitter it will certainly…

Dimitri Nuñez Is On The Hill Tomorrow

Even the best teams go through rough patches and the Redbirds are currently battling those choppy seas. The Game 2 loss in today’s doubleheader marked the third consecutive for the Birds and it didn’t help that their offense could only muster two hits in the contest. Despite the skid, there are still bright spots including a line-drive single through the middle by Kenny Collins. The other positive from the day was that both new Redbirds acquisitions seem to promise productivity. Outfielder d’Aundray Van Slyke added the second base hit for…

Redbirds Fall Despite Strong Outing From Hall

The Redbirds dropped Game 1 of the scheduled twin bill but it wasn’t for lack of pitching from starter Scott Hall. Hall, the 39th ranked Empire League prospect by Ahead of the Spread’s staff, was perfect through four. The big righty was on a roll but he was removed in the 6th with one out and a man on second. The move turned out to spell doom for the Birds who’s bullpen ran into trouble which led to the eventual loss. Lifting Hall didn’t look good in hindsight but the…

Redbirds Fall Short in Series Opener

After a brief road trip in which Plattsburgh took three of five from Sullivan, the Redbirds’ bats hit a stroke of bad luck in the series opener against the Puerto Rico Islanders. We expected the Plattsburgh magic to return when Christian Nazario-Cruz scored the first run of the game in the first inning on an RBI single from Mitchell Lake but the Redbirds could not add to their lead. The game held at 1-0 into the 6th behind the strong performance of starter, Izaiah Guerrero, who shut down the Islanders…

Rockies Release Coronado After 3-HR Week

Nine hits, three homers, one triple, and zero strikeouts over five games was enough for the Rockies to decide they didn’t see Nathaniel Coronado fitting into their plans anymore. The Sullivan Explorers alum was released on July 7th after just 20 at bats in which 45% resulted in a hit while he slugged 1.000. Coronado was an Empire League All-Star in 2016 after a brief stint in the Atlantic League in 2015. The shortstop’s physical tools glaringly stuck out on an Explorers team loaded with talented prospects. His batting practice…

THE DREAM: Overcoming Adversity

The Start: I’m here… the first stage of my dream has begun. This is just a stepping stone that will help me get there. What is that dream you ask? That’s becoming a Major League Baseball player and defying the odds–the dream I’ve had since I was a little kid. Growing up I was always in the shadow of the Little League all-stars. I didn’t start playing baseball on a team until I was 12 years old, but I always loved the game and I was a die hard Yankee…

Back to Winning Ways

The story of the day was Dimitri Nuñez. The left-hander was brilliant, scattering six hits and walking three over eight and a third. Things looked rocky early as Kevin Putkonen blasted the first ever home run at Chip Cummings Field, a solo shot to right. But Nuñez would settle down and hold the Surge in check the rest of the way. His delivery varied from batter to batter, sometimes pitch to pitch, keeping hitters off balance and inducing soft contact for his fielders. The Redbirds would score three in a…
