NCAA Softball Roundup 3/28/17

A great SEC matchup finished up last night, as the No. 5 Auburn Tigers defeated the No.2 Florida Gators, 1-0. The Gators were leading the three game series, 2-0 going into last night’s matchup.
The first game was down to the wire as the Gators fought back from a 3-2 deficit in the bottom of the seventh. With two outs to go, Gator junior Nicole DeWitt stepped up with two runners on. DeWitt collected her first hit of the game with a single to the second base side. This hit led both Gator baserunners to score and it led to coming out of the first game with one in the win column.
With last night’s Auburn Tigers win, head coach Clint Myers collected his 1,500 career win. The Tigers struck early as sophomore Kendall Veace hit a long ball over the centerfield wall for her eighth home run of the season. After that it was a pitching battle, with both pitchers only allowing three hits a piece. Starting in the circle for the Tigers was junior, Kaylee Carlson. Carlson improved to 15-1 on the season. Senior Delanie Gourley was on the mound for the Gators and fell to 11-2 on the season.
It was a big weekend for two other NFCA top 25 teams. No. 20 Michigan head coach Carol Hutchins reached 1,500 career wins. No. 4 Arizona head coach Mike Candrea was the fastest coach to reach the same milestone as Hutchins. The Michigan Wolverines senior pitcher Megan Betsa leads the NCAA in K’s with 193 as of March 28, 2017. Wildcats Redshirt senior, Danielle O’Toole, pitched her first career no hitter against No.8 Washington. Arizona completed the weekend with three more wins to improve to 32-1 overall with victories coming; 3-0, 12-0 and 5-2.
There has been some movement in this week’s NFCA poll. The two top spots remain the same, No. 1 FSU and No. 2 Florida. The undefeated Oregon Ducks move up to the number three spot and the Arizona Wildcats move up to the four. FSU finished off the weekend with three in the win column with 13-1, 6-0 and 10-0 victories over Virginia. The Ducks picked up two wins against No. 15 Utah, 12-3 and 3-0.
Another weekend down and there’s still more to go. The upcoming weekend has one series to look forward to. No.3 Oregon takes on No. 21 Arizona State in a three game series. Good luck to all teams playing this weekend!
